Jemima Shetima-Balami, a 24-year-old Mass Communication student at Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State, allegedly committed herself because her lover broke up with her.
She was described as a second-year National Diploma student on an industrial attachment with Adamawa State Television in Yola.
After her partner, apparently a lecturer (name withheld) at Modibbo Adama University, broke up with her, the news men discovered that she consumed a substance suspected to be rat poison.
Jemima, who is from Garkida in Adamawa State’s Gombi Local Government Area, died at her residence in Vinikilang, near ATV Yola, where she was observing her industrial attachment.
Jemima was claimed to be her father’s only daughter, and he had to alert the police about her untimely death.
The event was reported on Monday by the state’s Public Relations Officer, SP Yahaya Suleiman.
She said that Jemima’s father had reported a suicide case, while another individual had complained about Jemima’s bad relationship with the lecturer.
He claimed, “Jamima’s father reported that she committed suicide by consuming a lethal poison. Another version has her seeing her partner, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University Yola, and being ordered to discontinue the relationship.
“Angered by her boyfriend’s news, the dead ingested poison. We are examining the situation, and justice will be served.
He also advised the public to refrain from taking their own lives, stating that disputes might be settled amicably rather than going to extremes because committing suicide is an offense.
