Singer Portable made fun of Nigerians for cheering on their team, the Super Eagles, after they defeated South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
In an internet video, Portable expressed his opinion that Nigerians should band together to fight poverty and hunger rather than focus on sports. He claimed that although the Super Eagles players have now gotten their wages, the fans who were celebrating their victory had not eaten.
Please pray for Nigeria, my people. We are going to die of hunger. Everyone of you ought to take a seat and ask themselves, “Why am I happy?” Why am I swaying back and forth? Have I had any food? The dollar is now higher. Euro is in motion. The Naira is where? You’re watching football, opening your chest, and not giving your life any thought. You are yelling, “Goal!” your wife and kids are at home and haven’t eaten and you are shouting ’Goal! Goal!, Up Nigeria!”
