The Algeria Football Federation, who fired Djamel Belmadi for his lackluster performance at the just-completed Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, has expressed interest in appointing Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro as their new manager.
Belmadi’s dismissal followed his inability to assist the country in progressing past the Group stages.
Peseiro guided Nigeria to the 34th AFCON championship game, where they were defeated 2–1 by the host country, Ivory Coast.
At the end of the month, Jose Peseiro’s contract with Nigeria will expire, and his faith will be decided by the Federal Government.
Walid Sadi, the president of the Algerian football federation, is reportedly impressed by Peseiro’s qualifications and is open to speaking with the Portuguese strategist about taking over as head coach of their national team, according to the Algerian daily DZ Foot.
The website stated that three names—José Peseiro, 63, Vladimir Petkovic, 60, and Carlos Queiroz, 70—are on the shortlist that the FAF’s ad hoc commission established but did not make public.
Notwithstanding the fact that Carlos Queiroz’s name has recently resurfaced as the FAF’s ultimate selection, our knowledge indicates that José Peseiro will ultimately be Walid Sadi’s preferred option.
“In fact, the individual who led Nigeria to the 2023 CAA championship would have had direct access to the president of the Algerian football association, who would have been enticed by his reputation and oratory, not to mention the monetary element.”
