As preparations heighten for the conduct of council elections in Ebonyi State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to decide whether it will participate in the exercise.
A prominent leader of the party and Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, while fielding questions from reporters at his Uburu country-home during a courtesy visit by south-east traditional rulers yesterday, said that contrary to statements credited to a factional chairman of the party in the state, the APC will meet later to enable it take a stand on the exercise.
“The party will meet, look at all matters and then take a decision. And communicate it’s position to the public in due course”, he informed. The state’s Independent Electoral Commission had while releasing guidelines for the election announced April 22 as the date for the exercise.
Onu said the agenda of a closed-door meeting he had with the traditional rulers centered on their concern about the welfare of the five state’s in the south-east.
He said the meeting also looked into other matters, including how the Igbos can mobilize to support government. The minister who also reacted to reports that some South-East PDP governors were making moves to join the APC said the party will receive such decampees into it’s fold.
“We have seen a number of leaders from other political parties coming into the APC. The APC will welcome all those who finally decides. You can have an intention. But you may not be able to keep to that intention.’’
