German champions, Bayern Munich, have announced the signing of Jonathan Tah on a free transfer from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

The 29-year-old, who announced in April that he would be leaving Leverkusen after 10 years at the club, has signed a deal until 2029 at the Allianz Arena.

After 10 years with Bayer, Jonathan Tah has joined league rivals Bayern, where he will provide defensive support.

““I’m very happy to be at Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together,” said Tah.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, said: “It’s no secret that we’ve had Jonathan Tah on our radar for a long time.

We appreciate his quality: he’s a character who takes on responsibility. Jonathan had a lot of offers but chose Bayern, which pleases us very much.”

Christoph Freund, sporting director, said: “In Jonathan Tah, we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality, who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence. He’ll be a good and important addition for us with his technical qualities as well as his manner and the way he leads.”

Tah made his breakthrough as a professional at Hamburg as a gifted 17-year-old in the 2013/14 season, making 16 top-flight appearances in his debut campaign.

That was followed by a year in Bundesliga 2 with Fortuna Düsseldorf before Leverkusen signed him in 2015. The centre-back immediately became a first-team regular at the BayArena and developed into a senior German international, making his debut in March 2016 against England.

Tah was a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s title-winning Leverkusen side in 2023/24, scoring four times in 31 Bundesliga appearances. In total, he made 402 competitive outings for Die Werkself across his decade at the club.
