Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has announced a 24-hour curfew in the Mangu Local Government Area of the state, effective immediately.
Gyang Bere, the governor’s director of press and public affairs, acknowledged the situation in a statement made on Tuesday.
He stated that the decision was made in response to a deteriorating security scenario in the area.
The announcement stated, “Governor Mutfwang made the decision following consultations with the relevant security agencies.”
“He added that only those doing vital responsibilities are permitted to move within the local government jurisdiction until further notice.
“He asked all individuals, particularly inhabitants of the Mangu Local Government Area, to follow the directive and aid security personnel in restoring peace and order in the area by providing trustworthy information.
“He bemoaned that certain people remain intent to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the state, despite the government’s efforts to put an end to terrorist elements’ operations.
“He extended his condolences to the families of the fatalities and injured, assuring them that the government will not stop working to ensure the state’s long-term stability.
“He promised that the curfew will be reviewed as soon as the security situation improves.”
The Plateau State Government enforced a curfew in the Mangu local government area after 29 people, including women and children, were allegedly killed by suspected militia herders in a midnight attack on May 16, 2023, in Kubwat and Fungzai villages.
On July 9, 2023, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang placed a 24-hour curfew on the Mangu Local Government Area in response to ongoing attacks that have resulted in the loss of lives and property.
No less than 13 people were killed in attacks on several areas in the LGA.
According to locals in the afflicted areas, bandits attacked Pushit and Sabon-Gari on Saturday night, injuring some inhabitants and burning down buildings.
To avert revenge and escalation of the situation, the governor declared a 24-hour curfew in Mangu.
On June 19, 2023, a 24-hour curfew was enforced in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State following a renewed attack on some towns, according to Governor Mutfwang, who stated that over 150 people had been slain in Mangu within three weeks.
Markus Artu, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee, stated that no motor movement would be permitted during the curfew.
