Adamu Danga Rijau, 62, has been taken into custody by the Niger State Police Command for the defiling of a 6-year-old girl in Minna.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the command’s spokeswoman, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, revealed that a witness had seen the culprit raping the youngster inside a cemetery and had reported the incident.
The suspect, who fled from the scene, was pursued and caught by a mob.
The PPRO stated that the suspect claimed he was impaired by the palm wine he had consumed on the way home from the farm and blamed alcohol for the incident.
According to the statement, on January 30, 2024, at approximately 2100 hours, Bosso Division received information that, on the same day, at approximately 1800 hours, a 62-year-old man from the Bosso Lowcost area of Minna was seen in the vicinity of Numui Cemetery in Minna without pants, perched atop a young girl who appeared to be about 6 years old. The suspect fled the scene.
“However, it was stated that the witness had raised an alarm before the Police Division could arrive on the scene. As a result, the crowd followed the culprit and took him into custody. After an initial inquiry at Bosso Div, the matter was moved to SCID Minna and he was sent there right away.
“The defendant admitted during questioning that she had tricked the victim into going to the cemetery area after her mother had sent her on an errand.
He went on to admit that he defiled the young girl because he was drunk.
He stated that he purchased some palm wine on the way home from the farm, and that it was the palm wine that affected him before he committed the crime.
“While the case is being investigated, the victim was brought to the Police Clinic for a medical examination. The suspect will be charged in court as soon as the investigation is complete.”
