According to two of her advisers who talked to NBC News, US Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to contact US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to surrender the 2024 presidential contest and to make a public statement.
At her alma school, Howard University, Harris is scheduled to speak to the country at 4 p.m. ET. According to one of the aides, she is currently preparing her speech. According to a White House official, President Joe Biden also intends to phone Trump on Wednesday and discuss the election results in public.
According to a White House official, Biden’s response to Trump’s victory will include all of the things Trump did not do when Biden won in 2020, including calling to congratulate him, inviting him to the White House, and offering to attend his inauguration.
Just after 5:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, November 6, Trump won the election with 276 electoral votes to Harris’ 223.
Around 2:30 a.m., Trump announced his victory to his followers during a Florida election party.
Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race on July 21 and his endorsement as the Democratic Party’s nominee, Harris, 60, began her own presidential campaign. Key party members had serious worries about Biden’s age, his chances of winning the general election, and his capacity to serve another four years in the White House following his dismal performance in a June presidential debate against Trump, which led Biden to withdraw.
Trump began his third presidential campaign immediately after the 2022 midterm elections that November, while Harris had around three months to run.
Despite being found guilty of 34 criminal charges in a New York hush money case and trying to rig the 2020 presidential election, which resulted in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump was re-elected.
