Former Super Eagles legendary goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has reportedly died at the age of 61, according to News360 Nigeria.
Radio Nigeria reports that Rufai passed away on Thursday after battling a prolonged illness that had kept him out of the public eye for some time.
While the family has yet to officially confirm the sad news, a senior Lagos State Government official has reportedly verified the development.
Celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, Rufai enjoyed a remarkable football career, earning 65 caps for the national team. He played in two FIFA World Cups and was instrumental in Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The former goalkeeper, who also featured for clubs such as Stationery Stores and Go Ahead Eagles, is fondly remembered for his agility, leadership, and crucial contributions to Nigerian football during the Super Eagles’ golden era.
