Lagos—The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, yesterday attended a session conducted in Yoruba by the Lagos State House of Assembly and thereafter commended the members for promoting the language and culture.
He also called on other state Assemblies in the South West to take a queue from Lagos. He made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the Assembly. Ooni Ogunwusi commended the Lagos lawmakers for being in the forefront of promoting the Yoruba language and culture. “I’m very happy to be here and I want to commend the members for being in the forefront of promoting Yoruba language and culture,” Oba Ogunwusi said. While receiving the Ooni as special guest at the Yoruba session of the plenary, the Speaker of the House , Mr. Mudashiru Obasa restated the commitment of the Assembly to the promotion of Yoruba language and the culture of the Yoruba people. “We have started conducting our Thursday plenary sessions in Yoruba. We have gone ahead to organise the Yoruba Stakeholders’ Summit and we will ensure that the teaching of Yoruba language becomes compulsory in Lagos schools,’’ he said. Meantime, the newly appointed Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, LSSC, Hakeem Dickson has said that every house in the state must possess a fire extinguisher cylinder as safeguard from disasters. Dickson gave this assurance while addressing members of the House during plenary towards approving his nomination as the head of the commission. Also, the State Coordinator of the Federal Government N-Power scheme, Shola Falana gave assurance that the Scheme would commence fully in Lagos by month-end. While responding to some of the questions raised by the lawmakers, Falana explained that the Federal Government has final verdict on the programme, saying she was acting according to instructions.
