Tragedy struck the United Methodist Church (UMC) on Tuesday night as renowned evangelist Norest Nyakudanga suddenly collapsed and passed away while delivering a sermon in Highlands, Harare.
The 65-year-old preacher, from St. Peters Chitungwiza, was the guest speaker at the End of Year Revival gathering at the Chisipite UMC assembly, with the event also being livestreamed on Facebook.
Eyewitnesses recounted that Evangelist Nyakudanga appeared full of energy and joy before the sermon, showing no signs of illness. According to a church member who witnessed the event, Nyakudanga even danced and sang with the congregation before delivering his sermon.
During his heartfelt message, he urged the congregation to focus on positive and uplifting messages for the church, warning against divisive narratives. However, tragedy unfolded when Nyakudanga suddenly collapsed at the pulpit. Nurses in the congregation rushed to assist, but despite their efforts, they were unable to revive him.
Chitungwiza-Marondera UMC chairman, Rangarirai Nyahodza, expressed sorrow over the loss of a dedicated leader and servant of God. He praised Nyakudanga for his unwavering commitment to the gospel and his role as a mentor to many in the church community. Nyahodza revealed that Nyakudanga had been experiencing side pains but chose to continue preaching through the discomfort.
Mourners have gathered at his home in Zengeza 5 Extension. Evangelist Nyakudanga will be laid to rest on Friday at Donzwe Village in Mutoko.
