POETRY: Poet Jenim Dibie Launches ‘The Calligraphy of God’

A Nigerian poet and author Jenim Dibie crowned her literary efforts in year 2016 with the launch of her book, The Calligraphy of God, which was held recently. Family and friends joined the author to celebrate the launch of her new book of poetry in Lagos.

Dibie’s collection of poems revolves around four major aspects of everyday life: love, loss, life, and death. The work does not fall short of her previous one, Scarcast. In her latest work, she attracts readers with pictorial portraits that explain and describe the idea each poem represents.

The Delta State-born writer said her inspiration has always been life circumstances and seeing other people struggling to survive the complexities of life. She also said it took her only a day to complete all the poems in The Calligraphy of God.

According to her, “I dared myself to start and finish writing all the poems in one day. I didn’t eat or drink till I was done writing.”Dibie’s family friend of 10 years, Odiri Prosper Avwenagha, who read ‘The deaf song’ from her first book, Scarcast, said he loves “the unpredictability and uniqueness of Dibie’s poems” adding that “unpredictability is the beauty of all of her poems.”

Also reading from Scarcast was Adeolu Adeleye, who read the poem ‘All I am.’ Adeleye said the poem teaches him all about self-discovery and “shows how people need to keep moving with the tide of time.”

Also another guest, Muktar Momodu, said although Dibie comes off as a very quiet and reserved person, she is accommodative of the people around her, and treats them in very loving and pleasant ways.

Her mother, Mrs. Ndidi Dibie, told the audience that she recalled that Jenim started writing at a very young age – 15, and admitted that she never supported her quest in being a writer, but she later had to recognise her daughter’s interest in writing as a God-given talent that needed to be fostered and nurtured.

Dibie has gained a very large followership on social media, both internationally and locally. A lot of them said the depth of her writing is what thrills and attracts them.

At the gathering, people spoke of Dibie’s writing style and how much they respect her determination and work ethics. A guest, who spoke at the launch, said he was amazed by how she could put together such a voluminous and inspiring book in just 24 hours.

Nonso Egbuna, who met Dibie on Facebook back in 2012, and became drawn to her works, said, “Dibie is a star and I am waiting for so much more she has to offer the world.” To also spice up the event were different performances, mostly of spoken words, live music, and short stories told by some of the guests.
