Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes usually keep quiet about their personal lives, but when the La La Land star won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, he got real about their longtime relationship.
In his acceptance speech, the actor gave a heartfelt thanks to his “sweetheart” Mendes, revealing that while he filmed La La Land, she took care of their daughter while being pregnant with their second child and caring for a brother who was suffering from cancer.
Gosling said:
“I’d like to try and thank one person properly and say that while I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences that I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer. If she hadn’t had taken all of that on so that I could have this experience, would [sic] surely be someone else here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you. And if I may, I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother, Juan Carlos Mendes. Thank you very much to the HFPA. Goodnight.”
Mendes and Gosling met in 2012 when they costarred in the film, The Place Beyond the Pines. They welcomed their first daughter Esmeralda in 2014 and their second, Amada, in April 2016. Watch his full speech below.
