The investigation of the previous governor has been proposed by the Kaduna State House of Assembly and an ad hoc committee established to examine all finances, loans, and contracts awarded during the administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai.
On Wednesday, June 5, during plenary, Henry Zacharia, the ad hoc committee’s chairman, gave a report of the committee’s conclusions. The audit discovered that in certain instances, due process was not followed and that the majority of loans secured under El-Rufai’s government were not used for their intended purposes.
After reviewing the findings, Speaker of the Kaduna House of Assembly Yusuf Liman stated that the El-Rufai administration embezzled N423 billion, leaving the state with enormous debts.
Therefore, the committee recommended that security and anti-corruption agencies look into and prosecute El-Rufai and other indicted members of his cabinet for abusing their positions by awarding contracts without following the proper procedures, diverting public funds, money laundering, and heavily indebting Kaduna State.
The committee called for a thorough investigation of several important appointments made by the previous government by capable law enforcement and anti-corruption authorities, and recommended suspending the state commissioner of finance for Kaduna, Shizer Badda, who was also employed by El-Rufai’s administration, as well as the head of the state universal basic education board.
