The Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Olatunde Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, David Ogunsola, were two traditional leaders of Ekiti State who were killed on Tuesday. President Bola Tinubu denounced the killings.
The Alara of Ikole Ekiti, Adebayo Fatoba, was reportedly driving the traditional rulers’ vehicle back from a security meeting in Irele-Ekiti on Monday when gunmen opened fire on a hamlet in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
Fatoba left the site after the attack claimed the lives of two of the monarchs.
The three traditional rulers were attempted to be abducted by the attackers, according to Michael Ogungbemi, the chairman of the Ajoni Local Council Development Area, who verified the information.
Between Ipao and Oke Ako, at a place known as “Ayo Shock,” they were ambushed.
The statement, titled “President Tinubu condemns killing of traditional rulers in Ekiti and directs immediate rescue of kidnapped pupils,” was signed by Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Media and Publicity. It said, “President
Tinubu condemns this mindless and brutal bloodletting, and pledges that the perpetrators will not escape justice.”
In addition to expressing his condolences to the two traditional rulers’ families and subjects, Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the people of Ekiti State also expressed his grief over what he described as a “deeply agonising development.”
Similarly, the President issued an order for the quick release of students and instructors who had been abducted in the state’s Eporo-Ekiti region.
Unknown gunmen abducted at least six students, three instructors, and a bus driver in Ekiti on Monday night as they were leaving Eporo-Ekiti.
Students from Apostolic Faith School in Ekiti were involved in the event, according to a tweet made by Ekititrends on its X account on Tuesday.
In response to the incident, Tinubu gave Nigerians assurances that the country’s security architecture was being firmly fortified for improved and expected outcomes, with the security of people’s lives and property remaining the government’s top priority.
