Quincy Promes, a former football star for Ajax, was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in the importation of approximately 1,350 kilograms of cocaine.
Promes was charged in May of last year for his alleged role in the cocaine smuggling, which resulted in two batches of 650 kg and 713 kg of cocaine being discovered in Antwerp in January 2020.
Promes and a 32-year-old co-suspect have now been formally found guilty by the Public Prosecution Service of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing the drugs.
The drugs were allegedly shipped to Antwerp in two containers from Brazil, where the cocaine was concealed in a cargo of sea salt.
The former Ajax winger never spoke about the charges against him because he did not show up for the trial, according to NOS.
According to additional sources, the former Netherlands international ignored the court dates, indicating that he feels “untouchable.”
Prosecutors reportedly stated: “He seems to think he is untouchable in Russia or abroad,” according to NL Times.
Furthermore, according to reports, prosecutors were curious as to “how such a successful footballer allowed himself to be drawn so deeply into crime.”
When the case was brought forward last month, the Spartak Moscow forward was originally targeted by Dutch officials for a nine-year prison sentence.
Asserting that Promes “normalizes and almost romanticizes the cocaine trade,” the prosecution asked for a nine-year term.
Prosecutors contend that Promes’ wealth allowed him to invest and, as a result, move up the organizational ladder.
According to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, “the case came to light after the police Criminal Intelligence Team received information that the 32-year-old man, who now lives in Russia, was involved in the cocaine trade.”
He is rumored to have invested 200,000 euros in the trade and to acquire cryptocurrency phones.
An investigation was started as a result of those facts. The suspect was watched after eavesdropping equipment was put in his vehicle.
The authenticity of the TCI information was verified, in part, by looking through other people’s confiscated phones and finding conversations in which the suspects took part.
It was evident from several chat messages that both suspects were involved in the arrival, removal, additional transportation, and sale of these two consignments.
Promes was given an 18-month prison sentence back in June for stabbing his cousin.
The incident that occurred in July of 2020 led to the arrest of the 31-year-old forward, who plays forward for the Russian team Spartak Moscow, in December of that same year.
According to ESPN, the Dutch court determined that Promes’ assault allegations were substantiated, but it concluded that neither attempted murder nor manslaughter had occurred.
At a family gathering at a warehouse in Abcoude, Promes was stabbed in the leg following an altercation about a pilfered jewelry.
At the time, he was playing for Ajax in the Netherlands, but in February 2021, he relocated to Spartak.
